About this Blog
Welcome fellow librarians!
The following blog is
a project for a graduate level course titled: Information Ethics with Dr. Akin.
Throughout my posts, I explore the topic of Intellectual Freedom in academic
libraries.
Even though our society has made giant steps in the area of freedom
of information, we still have a long way to go. People are still trying to make
certain resources censored to the public. As you can see, I used the word
censor. This project taught me that censorship is the antonym of intellectual
freedom and it's biggest threat. Unfortunately, like in any super hero
movie, censorship is the villain in this story. A story that features
librarians as its main characters. An infographic posted on this website shows
the percent of censorship incidents by type of libraries, and academic
libraries scored a 3%; it should be zero.
As librarians, we must protect the flow of freedom of information
at all costs. It's the foundation our country is built upon. Freedom of
information equals to democracy, and democracy is one of the core values of
librarianship.
Sincerely,
Pearl
Bookman, a future academic librarian that starts in September 1st :)
